Lovers and Fathers and Baby Seals

Recent reviews over at the homefront:

Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experiment... I mean, Experience, is all shiny surface, and it works until it tries to dig a little deeper.

Bobcat Goldthwaite's World's Greatest Dad is so agonizingly funny and uncomfortable that I started to feel as if I had done something wrong and was about to be punished.

The Norwegian kids' movie SOS: Summer of Suspense features great kid actors, a screenplay that doesn't talk down to kids or stuff in inappropriate innuendo for adults, and a really cute baby seal.

Sorry, nothing to do about movies, but did you ever live in Leslie MI?

I was living in Marquette, Michigan when I was 14 and Bobcat came up there to perform at NMU University. The show was great (my 14-year-old self thought it was great, anyway). Suddenly, at the end of his set the lights went down and the music to U2's "With or Without You" started to play. Bobcat Goldthwaite dropped his Bobcat stand-up character and morphed into Bono. He looked, sounded and moved exactly like him as he belted out the song with that Bono "please worship me" posture. When the song ended he walked off the stage to a standing ovation. Everyone once in a while I go back to that performance and think, "Where the hell did that come from?" Oh, and I loved World's Greatest Dad. Kyle, the little bastard, made me laugh out loud every time he spoke.

Alison: Yes I did. Are you Alison Girard? If you get a chance, email me at goatdogsmovies@gmail.com.

Shawn: That guy has hidden depths. Have you seen Shakes the Clown? I have not, but I'm curious now, after seeing this awesome film.

I saw Shakes the Clown a long time ago so I can't really say if it's good or not. I remember loving parts of it. I see that it's on Netflix streaming. I'll have to check it out again.
