Posted by: Kris at August 7, 2006 12:28 PMAmazing. But isn't 41p a bit expensive for a stamp from antiquity ; )?
Posted by: KatherineB. at August 8, 2006 10:14 AMThese are very special stamps. Perhaps used only by royalty.
Posted by: goatdog at August 8, 2006 12:43 PMThe Lancasters used this stamp specifically for mailing warships to their supporting Lords during the War of the Roses. The war ships would arrive at the castle doorstep, delivered by MedEx, which is short for Medieval Express. The only bad side was that the ships had "some assembly required," and the directions were written in cunieform, which would not be deciphered for another few hundred years. So the ships were never used.
I think this is going to be the thesis of my disseration. :-P
