Recent Books

The USA Trilogy by John Dos Passos. I'm on volume 2, 1919. Parts of it are the best thing I've ever read, and parts of it make my eyes glaze over.

Movies on Trial: The Legal System on the Silver Screen by Anthony Chase. A really well-crafted film history that necessarily delves into the history of the legal system. Pretty enlightening stuff.

Star Trek: I don't like it.

J.J. Abrams's Star Trek reboot would be passable as a sci-fi film if not for the title: this is supposed to be a Star Trek film, and this is a long, long way from anything that Gene Roddenberry imagined. Star Trek is supposed to ponder and consider; this film smirks and explodes. (It also shines bright lights into the camera, but more on that later.)

Extra: He made old Star Trek look like new Star Trek!

I tried this before and forgot the security code so I don't think it went through. Anyway, you're on Rottentomatoes! I had no idea. The comments are hilarious. Myself, I enjoyed the movie. Of course, I was pretty drunk. Also, we got there late and had to sit in the second row on the isle. I hadn't realized that Star Trek characters had such giant hands. Scary.

I have to admit -- not being a star trek watcher, I feel totally out, but I don't even want to watch the new movie becuase i feel like I couldn't know if I liked it or not with out the back story --- even thought I AM SURE it's constructed in a way I could "get it" I think I would still feel left out.

I'm quite please to know that you're one of us, we happy few who just don't get WTF is so incredibly awesome about this fairly nondescript summer beast.

Also, I totally got death threats on my review for this one. Rotten Tomatoes commenters are just the best, aren't they?
