Sting

A Reuters headline tells us "Sting Says Today's Rock Is a Bore." Let's play "guess the correct headline"!

"Sting's Rock Is a Bore Today"
"Today's Rock Says Sting Is a Bore"
"Sting Is a Bore (But He Wasn't Always)"

Sting's Rock Is Boring Today

Wait, you already said that.
Boring Rock Stings Today

Sting is a Giant Tool

Wait, was that an option? As we all know, 16th century English ballads are not boring. Not boring at all. Also, Natalie Merchant is fascinating, Coldplay really fires me up and all those standards that Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow covered? That was so awesome! Sting makes Bono look like Stiv Bators. Don't stand so close to me, indeed.

My mom bought me Sting's last album for Christmas a couple of years ago. I was a big fan of his early stuff, so I guess she assumed I still liked him. Problem is that I have not liked his last three albums. My reason? I thought they were boring!

His last album was more of an R&B album, though. That said, it sounded like every other R&B album I've ever heard. It is ironic that someone who has become so unoriginal would complain about how boring rock has become.

Even if he happens to be right. ;-)

Shane, Shane, Shane. We've been over this ground before. *sigh* May I recommend Ok Go? How about some Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs? Maybe the Black Keys? Oh, I know...Flaming Lips! Hell, they've been around for over twenty years and there still kickin' that metaphorical ass. There's always that new Chili Peppers album. Old people are loving it (and I dig it, too) ;) Sparkehorse, The Killers, Wolf Mother, Modest Mouse and Devendra Banhart are all artists I'm groovin' to right now. Actually, out of everyone I mentioned I think you'd really love Devendra Banhart. You should get his album, Michigan. It's way cool. Goatdog, your turn.

I don't like Wolf Mother, and having heard another song off the new Killers disc, I don't like it either. However, I am making Shane a mix disc of the New Pornographers and Neko Case, which I think he will like. You should make him a mix and send it his way. He's said in the past that he's sure there's good music out there but he doesn't have the time or energy to seek it out. I think. Maybe I'm misrepresenting his opinion.

I'm known for being terrible at sending things in the mail, but that is a good idea. Have you listened to Devendra Banhart? I love that guy.

Posted by: Shawn at October 20, 2006 12:17 AM

Ahem...the album, Michigan, is by Surfjan Stevens, who is awesome. Devendra Banhart's album is Rejoicing in the Hands. I'm an idiot. Got all confused and stuff.

Heh, heh. FOOLS! You fell for my trap to increase my incoming mail. I mean... I am open to listening to new music. Thanks for the suggestions! However, the funny thing is that usually my favorite music that Mike has sent me over the past years was actually old music or older groups, like The Mekons.

And I LOVE funny ringtones. LOVE THEM! :-P

Except you loved Andrew Bird, unless you're lying to me. I don't know how much "new" music I've sent you, probably because most of my recent acquisitions have been older albums that are new to me, which I then send on to you.

Posted by: mike at October 20, 2006 10:04 AM

I did like Andrew Bird! I also said USUALLY my favorites end up being older bands.

I'll bet that 19 out of 20 of the last cds I have bought (yes, I still buy cds) have been by groups or artists before 1999.

Maybe I'm just OLD. ;-)

Maybe you're Olde.
