The End
At 11:54 pm, I finished watching Gone with the Wind, my 459th and final Best Picture nominee. (As far as I know, The Patriot is still lost, and will remain so.) Although I didn't exactly save the best for last—I did love parts, and liked it quite a bit overall—it was a fitting end, and at least now there will be no more outraged looks when I admit that I haven't seen it.
Next up: Best Director. Only 43 to go!
Posted by mike, September 26, 2008 11:58 PMCongratulations! Zowie!

Posted by: Dame James Henry at September 27, 2008 11:05 AMYou totally did save the best for last!! Less enthusiastic response than I was expecting but I'm glad you liked it. What did you think of Vivien?
Posted by: Cal at September 27, 2008 12:13 PMThe first half and the last 30 minutes are among the best things I've ever seen, but after the intermission it really takes a while to get going again; it feels like it's lost track of its storyline. But it ends so well! I found it interesting how effective some of the scenes were, even though I feel like I knew them by heart because they've been quoted and parodied so many times. When Scarlett gives her "I'll never go hungry again" speech, I got goosebumps all over, it was so moving. And Rhett's "frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" is like a punch in the gut, even though I knew it was coming.
I loved Vivien most of all! It's so weird--I'd probably never think to list her as one of my favorite actresses, but I think she gave two of the ten best Best Actress winning performances of all time. Maybe I'll have to revise my list of favorite actresses.
Posted by: mike at September 28, 2008 12:17 AMWell when the intermission comes it's the end of the Old South as she knows it, and so after the break it's in a transitory phase and trying to settle the whole thing down. I guess by your comments that the "Frank Kennedy" years are the bits you least enjoyed. It maybe feels as if it should start to get happier since the intermission comes at such a depressing time in her life, and sometimes I wished for more parties, drinking and flirting that littered the first half, but I think this portion of the film does a lot for Scarlett as a character. It's the first time she's really ever sensible, and the tone of the film in this section maybe represents her coming to terms with her time in Georgia and the gruelling journey to Tara.
Sorry if I'm waffling on. Lol. I've seen it so many times I think the urge to defend it is in my blood.
Oh. As for Vivien, I know what you mean. I've only seen her in GWTW, Streetcar (my fave two Best Actress winning performances), and Waterloo Bridge, so I kind of decided that she couldn't really be my favourite, especially when so many of my other favourites were so prolific in their day.
Posted by: Cal at September 28, 2008 6:38 AMCongratulations! Good job!
Posted by: Mom in Maine at September 28, 2008 2:58 PMHoly hell, that's freaking amazing, man! Congrats!
Posted by: J.D. at September 28, 2008 4:45 PMWow, congratulations! And you ended with one of the greatest.
Posted by: Glenn at September 28, 2008 8:48 PMWow, amazing! Congrats!
Posted by: Stacia at September 29, 2008 9:12 PMYeah, I am a little late, but congratulations on completing the Best Picture marathon of a lifetime! I feel very proud to have been there toward the beginning. It is really fitting that you ended up on what some people consider the best picture of all time. It is definitely in my top 200! :-P
I'm still sad that I was out of town for this momentous occasion, but I cheer you on! I cheer you!
Maybe I'll be there for the last Director?
Posted by: Nick at October 3, 2008 12:40 AMThanks, everyone! Nick, I'll be sure to save that one for you. I'll have to figure out which one it will be--maybe I'll keep the save-Altman-for-last (or nearly last) and make it Short Cuts.
Posted by: mike at October 5, 2008 7:35 PMIf a print of The Patriot is discovered will you start from the top of list and watch them all over again? :D
Congrats, dude. GWTW is a fine way to cap your journey.
Posted by: Thom at October 9, 2008 12:44 PMWow! Congratulations on a crazy ambitious goal. I'm having a hard time just finishing off my Best Picture list.
