Worst of the Best/Best of the Best
Blogger Edward Copeland polled other bloggers and visitors to his site about the ten worst Best Picture winners. His results are in, and some of them are a bit surprising.
I don't think Rocky, The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, American Beauty, Dances with Wolves, or Braveheart deserve to be there; conversely, seven of my bottom 10 made the bottom 20.
Here was my ballot:
1. The Broadway Melody
2. The Sound of Music
3. Tom Jones
4. Titanic
5. Crash
6. Oliver!
7. Cavalcade
8. Gladiator
9. Forrest Gump
10. Driving Miss Daisy
Now he's asking readers to mail in their ten best Best Picture winners. Oscar fans, take a few minutes out of your day and submit a ballot to eddiesworst@yahoo.com. He's got a list of all the winners, so you don't have to do any research.
Here's my ballot:
1. Schindler's List
2. Casablanca
3. The Godfather: Part II
4. It Happened One Night
5. All Quiet on the Western Front
6. The Godfather
7. All About Eve
8. On the Waterfront
9. The Best Years of Our Lives
10. The Apartment
You're one of the few people to actually watch, not only the winners, but the nominees (which makes you insane, which makes me like you.) I think most people go with the most recent films that have annoyed them, such as Chicago or Shakespeare in Love because these are the movies they didn't want to win. Like me with "Rocky" and "All The Presidents Men." It's personal. I think you have a more informed opinion when it comes to what were some truly bad nominations. Shakepeare in Love may not have deserved to win (who can say, really?) but one of the worst? That's silly. By the way, my mother would be very upset to see The Sound of Music on your list. hehe The most annoying best picture winner for me is Kramer vs. Kramer because it beat Apocalypse Now. It's painful to think about, which is kind of childish but I can't help it, Mike. Some things are just wrong.

I suspect Oliver! would make my list in a heartbeat, but I haven't seen it, so I did not count it.
