Zola in Love

The 11th episode of Best Pictures from the Outside In is up chez Nathaniel. Our merry band is looking at two films about writers; they serve as good examples of how (Shakespeare in Love) and how not (The Life of Emile Zola) to explore the writing life on celluloid. I was hoping to come up with a top ten films about writers, but I'm so swamped that all I really decided is that Shakespeare in Love will probably make the cut. Help me out: what are your favorite films about writers?

Naked Lunch is probably tops for me.

About a year ago I watched Shakespeare in Love again, as part of a DVD triple-bill of films about poets, each followed by a fun discussion with the viewers. The other two in the trio were Cocteau's Orpheus and the Sundance-feted Slam.

Other favorites about writers that come to mind include Mikio Naruse's Her Lonely Lane, Paul Schrader's Mishima: a Life in Four Chapters, and of course Sunset Blvd.

I took a night off to come up for some air (after sitting through four sets from art school dumbasses filming themselves bombing on purpose and basically throwing every comedian in the room into a deep depression I thought it best to take a break and visit you, my friend). I have a couple of faves when it comes to writers. First on my list is Born Into This the doc about Bukowski. I watch it every couple of weeks to keep me pumped for the ridiculous choice in life I have made. Second, is Barton Fink.
And I have to agree with Brian about Mishima. It's third on my list. Also, I've come to a new appreciation for Adaptation. How about All the Presidents Men? Journalists are writers, too, no? Even if it's rarely so these days. Miss you, dude. I want nothing more than to sit in the projection room eating popcorn knocking down some killer film noir I never knew existed as you narrate the history of its making. Hope things are well. Say hi to your wife for me.
