The Producers (1968) 3/5 goats

Brief Review

Con man Zero Mostel ropes his accountant, the neurotic Gene Wilder, into undertaking a moneymaking scheme. They produce an awful musical, "Springtime for Hitler," and sell several thousand percent of the stock to rich old women. The show is supposed to be a flop, but audiences think it's brilliant. This film was recently voted one of the funniest movies of all time by the American Film Institute. I agree that it was funny. I did not find it one of the funniest of all time, nor even one of the funniest I have seen recently. This may be because of the age of the movie. A great many of the jokes most likely pertained to an era of which I had no part. Some comedy holds up, like Some Like It Hot or The Lady Eve. This one didn't as well. It may also be a matter of taste: the physical nature of the comedy (Mostel and Wilder's mugging) did not appeal to me. There were sections of the film that I found uproarious, like the initial meeting of Bialystock and Bloom, or the frantic "cool, baby" pseudo-hip ranting of Kenneth Mars, as the star of the musical. Brooks's screenplay won an Oscar.
